The Environmental Justice Briefing
A New York Times-inspired newsletter that intends to raise awareness of the lead and mold crises experienced by residents of NYCHA units in New York City. Situated within the pockets of New York City, where triple-digit air quality indexes are commonplace, housing units managed by NYCHA neighbor freeways and landfills where threatening levels of volatile organic compounds and air pollution are customary. In spite of that, many NYCHA residents claim that the air quality outdoors is preferable to that of indoors, where tenants are suffocated by noxious mold and moisture seeping through their walls. Outdated roofs, ventilation, and piping are intimately correlated with the occurrence of mold in NYCHA complexes. This newsletter is a reality check to affluent communities and illustrates a side of New York City that is not glamourous and luxurious. I hope to display how the biological reality of mold and lead poisoning is real, as is the social reality that dictates who and where illness transpires.
